Osteoarthritis (OA) affects around 8 million people in the UK and the knee joint is one of the most common areas where the condition develops.
The condition occurs where the protective cartilage that lines the bones of the knee joint are damaged and worn away leading to bone on bone contact which is the main source of pain and discomfort. This can severely limit the sufferer’s mobility and quality of life.
As the condition is degenerative it will only get worse, which is why early diagnosis is essential in order to effectively manage the condition and delay the knee for knee replacement surgery.
For more information on the condition visit our knee osteoarthritis section.
The Unloader One is a knee brace which is clinically proven to aid the mobility of patients suffering from unicompartmental osteoarthritis of the knee.
The Unloader One works by offloading the pressure from the affected side of the knee to reduce bone on bone contact. By reducing the bone on bone contact it can help to reduce the degenerative nature of the condition, even delaying the need for surgery. With a reduced amount of pain the mobility of the patient can also be improved.
It is worth noting however that braces such as the Unloader One can only be used where only one side of the joint is affected by osteoarthritis of the knee.

|The Unloader One is a significant innovation in knee bracing technology and is designed to manage the effects of mild to severe unicompartmental osteoarthritis.|
Numerous clinical studies have been conducted to assess the benefits of the Unloader One in being able to effectively manage the symptoms of osteoarthritis.
In addition to these papers an experiment was performed by Dr Sheila Strover from the Knee Guru to attempt to capture that ‘Unloader moment’ the moment a person wears the brace for the first time and they are pain free.
Caroline works actively in countryside management and has been experiencing knee pain and inflammation for some time. The pain has prevented her from exercising, with doctors even suggesting a half knee replacement as a means of managing the condition, something she is not comfortable with. Find out more about Caroline’s story and her experience of using the Unloader One for the first time.
