The Neoprene Wrist Support with Thumb Spica is designed to immobilise the wrist and thumb following injury. The neoprene material ensures it is lightweight, low profile and most importantly breathable. This ensures it remains both comfortable and effective when being worn throughout the day and even night.
Immobilisation is often required following an injury to the wrist and thumb to help protect the joint when active (allowing it to heal). It also helps to minimise the risk of further injury during the day and night, since our hands are always active.
Typical injuries resulting in the use of a neoprene wrist and thumb support include light injuries such as a sprained wrist or repetitive strain injury. Following these injuries an additional level of support is often required in order to carry out daily tasks.
It is worth noting that they should be used as short term solutions during periods of injury and in conjunction with exercise to strengthen the joint. This is important as you ultimately want to reduce the reliance on the device long term.
It works by keeping the joint immobilised. If you've sprained your wrist then any movement cannot only be painful but can delay your recovery. The compressive nature of the material also helps to manage inflammation which in turn can help to reduce pain levels, which can also help improve mobility. The addition of the thumb spica keeps the thumb joint immobile. In considering this version the entire wrist and thumb are protected and allowed to heal whilst allowing you to remain active.
The Velcro fastening allows you to add or remove it quickly. It also allows you to tighten the brace easily to apply the right level of compression.
A diagnosis is essential in being able to select the correct product. Not only this but also an understanding as to the severity of an injury can influence your decision.
If you've simply suffered a wrist sprain with no impact on the thumb then a non-thumb variant would be a better option, something like the Formfit® Pro Wrist Support. A non-thumb variant will obviously give you greater function during recovery and make it easier to pick items up and grasp them.
For lighter injuries to the wrist and thumb such as sprains and strains then a neoprene wrist support with thumb spica is an option. They are lightweight, low profile and discreet whilst still allowing you to remain mobile throughout your recovery.
Where you have suffered a more serious injury or where you require an alternative to a plastercast then a more heavy duty support would be recommended, such as the Formfit® Wrist Support with Thumb Spica. This is a more heavy duty (and less low profile or discreet) support and whilst being an alternative to plastercast it can still protect against everyday impact damage which may adversely affect your recovery. Unlike plastercast it is also easy to remove, allowing you to clean the brace and your skin.
Please note: a wrist circumference measurement is required to ensure you select the correct neoprene wrist support.

However I struggled with the fit. The palm stay was not orientated correctly, nor was the thumb spica. The Velcro on the thumb spica was frustrating to use and rarely stayed in place after a few minutes. In the end I cut off the spica (easy to do) and removed both metal stays. Too I removed the case for the thumb spica. These alterations resulted in a support which was reasonable for my injury.
I do wonder if anyone at Ossur ever tried this support on. I think a simple neoprene sleeve for the thumb would be a better alternative. Get rid of the Velcro.
I fully appreciate the stays can be bent but even this did not help with the fit.
I did order all available sizes of this support and a variety of other supports to try. In the end decided the "personalization" of this support was the only way forward for me.
A VERY reasonable price.
Returns of things unwanted was quick and easy.
