The Formfit Thumb OA Day provides stability by preserving grip and function and is used. The day brace frees up the gripping motion and finger joint flexion for daily tasks. The low profile breathable and circular wrap design material, aids in a comfortable fit.
The support has been designed to help manage the effects of Carpometacarpal (CMC) Osteoarthritis (OA). Other common terms associated with the condition include Thumb OA, CMC OA or arthritic thumb. It is one of the most common forms of osteoarthritis after knee osteoarthritis. Regardless of the terminology the condition is where the cartilage within the thumb joint begins to wear away (a degenerative condition due to a range of factors), thereby creating bones on bone contact as the joint moves. It is this which is the main source of pain for the sufferer.
Given the importance of the hand and specifically the thumb joint the onset of Thumb OA can have a negative impact on everyday activities. If you’ve been diagnosed with Thumb OA you may notice the following symptoms:
If you’ve experienced any of the above symptoms then a professional diagnosis is advised. Following this diagnosis you may be advised to use a support for arthritic thumb to help preserve the pain relief and allowing full function of the thumb throughout the day.
The brace is intended to be worn during the day. It works by placing the brace on the wrist and thumb, fastening the straps until they feel tight enough and the thumb is stabilised in the brace. It is this stabilisation which minimises the bone on bone contact and with it reduces pain levels, which can be debilitating, offering support for the arthritis thumb joint.
The brace is made out of an elastic spacer stretchable fabric to ensure comfort. It includes a metal spiral stay to provide stability acting as a thumb splint for the osteoarthritis.
Firstly, when it comes to osteoarthritis, diagnosis is essential. As well as having confirmation of the condition by a medical professional you also need to understand the severity as this will determine the treatment pathway available to you.
In order to select the correct size you need to measure your wrist circumference, with 3 different sizes available. Selecting the correct size is essential to ensure you get the greatest possible outcome.
As the name suggest the Formfit Thumb OA Day is designed to be worn during the day by offering pain relief without compromising overall function. At night however you need to switch braces and opt for the Formfit Thumb OA Night Support for Arthritic Thumb.
Please note: wrist circumference is required to select the correct Thumb OA brace
