It is simply device which wraps around the wrist and thumb to keep the latter in place. Whilst helping to offer a high level of thumb support it does not compromise movement of the wrist or fingers on your hand. This allows you to carry on with your day.
A thumb splint can be used following a number of different injuries. It can be used where you’ve broken the bone and require immobilisation to keep it in place whilst it heals. It can also be used following a sprain where thumb support is required to protect it and minimise the risk of further injury.
The thumb splint is designed to restrict movement of the thumb post injury. This aids in the recuperation process. By restricting movement of the thumb you minimise the risk of causing further damage when mobile.
When searching online there are a variety of different terms used to essentially describe the same product. Common terms include thumb spica splint or thumb support. They are all designed to do one thing and that is to stabilise the appendage and protect it from further injury. Splint is a common term following bone breaks i.e. finger splint, leg splint etc and refers to an area of the body being immobilised.
The main difference between these products is the material used. In this instance it’s manufactured from elastic which means it’s comfortable as well as applying a degree of compression (which can help with pain relief). Plastic variants exist on the market which don’t offer compression like a material based variant. The primary focus here is immobilisation.
When selecting your product ensure you select the correct size and orientation, as there is a different product for your left hand and right hand.
Please note: wrist circumference is required to determine the correct size of thumb splint.

But this was purchased for someone else & although he said he could feel the benefit of the support almost immediately, he didn't wear it for long/hasn't worn it since because it made frequent washing of hands difficult. So for me personally, a bit of a waste of money, if only for that reason (sorry!).|
