Almost all of us will suffer from back pain at some point in our life; usually it is not caused by a serious condition. It may arise from poor posture, lifting a heavy item or twisting the back. The back pain may be due to strain in the muscles surrounding the spine. Treatment options include rest, physiotherapy (to work on strengthening the muscles in the back) and the use of back supports and lumbar supports offer an additional level of protection outside of your physiotherapy sessions.

Injury to the back can also affect the nerves in the spinal canal causing pain not only in the back but also in the lower limbs. Sciatica and spinal stenosis are conditions caused by changes in the spine with symptoms affecting the thighs and buttocks.
Incorrect lifting techniques and poor manual handling is one of the main causes of back pain in the workplace resulting in time off. In 2011/12 over 27 million days were lost following a work related injury, of which back injuries were one of the most common.

They are designed to offer compressive and proprioceptive benefits which can keep you mobile for longer and make you more aware of your movements and the range of motion you are able to attain. Compression works to manage inflammation which in turn can offer pain relieving qualities. They can also be used to help with conditions relating to the nervous system such as sciatica.
It’s a good question. When searching online you may see the term brace, support or belt and the results you get in Google may differ depending on which search term you use.
How do you know what they all mean and which one to select? Well here is a quick run through of what they all mean:
Back Support or Lumbar Support: Essentially they mean the same thing. The lumbar region is the lower part of your back (L1 to L5 if you want to get technical) and where the majority of the injuries tend to occur. They are designed to offer compression (to help with pain relief) and additional support when moving, driving, lifting etc.
Back Brace or Spine Brace: This is typically something which would be used in hospitals to protect the back following injury and prevent unnecessary movement during your recovery.
Back Belt: As the name suggests it’s a belt which is designed for your back. It can be for managing an injury but equally a term used to describe something to help with heavy lifting, weight lifting or in our case a pregnancy support belt to help relieve expectant mums of back pain.
Back Posture Support: These are typically not designed to manage injuries but simply to stop you slouching, which is common amongst those who spend long periods sitting at a desk or the older generation. Poor posture can lead to more serious back pain further down the line so it’s good to remedy early.
