Biomechanical studies show restriction of the passive range of motion, especially in inversion / supination directions with a prophylactic ankle support. Bracing increases mechanical stability and can enhance proprioception (joint position sense). Compared to non-elastic tape, prophylactic bracing is superior with regards to proprioceptive performance and range of motion control, especially under high intensity conditions as the bracing effect last over a longer time period.
The Formfit Ankle Support with Exoform® Technology is a hybrid between a rigid ankle stirrup and a soft ankle support. With a stirrup-shaped, plastic exoskeleton that conforms to the user's anatomy, it offers the comfort and compression of a soft ankle support with 20-35% more support than traditional stirrup supports. The figure-8 strap increases the level of control to help control the foot from rolling in and out.
The laced design ensures a close fit offering a high level of compression to manage inflammation which also offers pain relieving qualities. The low profile design ensures it can be worn in conjunction with your every day footwear and concealed easily to avoid attention. Manufactured from a breathable and comfortable material it can be worn for extended periods of time, with the brace remaining in place. The figure 8 strap offers an additional level of stability, with the external straps acting to reduce the risk of the ankle rolling when active and causing further damage.
Ankle injuries vary in their severity which is why diagnosis is essential in being able to identify the correct course of treatment and the right brace for your needs. The Formfit Ankle (with straps) offers the greatest level of support of the brand, designed for use when active and can be used when playing sports.
Instability is common in grade 2 ankle injuries and if left untreated can cause further problems, even resulting in surgery to repair the damage caused. With this in mind you should look for a brace which can control the movements of the ankle whilst still allowing you to remain mobile which offers a controlled application of force to the affected region and has been proven to be beneficial during recovery.
Benefits of using the Formfit® Ankle brace in prophylactic, acute, chronic and recurrent musculoskeletal conditions:
Guidelines recommend treatment consisting of immobilisation, compression, and elevation (RICE) during the first week after an acute ankle sprain. This is followed by ankle taping or bracing and neuromuscular training throughout the rehabilitation by the physiotherapist. Exercises to gradually improve balance, proprioception and muscle strengthening are necessary to prevent and reduce re-injury rates.
Ankle injuries are the most common sports-related injury, associated with a high rate of recurrence and societal costs. Total costs of treatment and work absenteeism due to ankle injuries are high. The prevention of recurrences can result in large savings on medical costs.
If you are looking for a lower level of support then the Formfit Ankle Support is available without the figure 8 strap. It still offers compression and a degree of stability and is an alternative where there is little or no instability following the initial injury and you are confident to put your weight on the affected joint.

Read More. I have used this product for several years with great benefit but find the current version to be quite inferior - the laces are slippery and difficult to tie and keep tied ion use, and the figure of eight tapes start ripping (at the edge of the foot) much too soon and much more quickly than those of previous versions. Although the material looks robust it seems to not have much resistance to tearing. Perhaps the tapes could be made replaceable as they always wear before the body of the brace.|
