Selecting an ankle support or brace can be a difficult task. With so many options, styles and manufacturers to choose from just where do you start? Not to mention the different naming conventions for what is essentially the same product.

We’ve introduced a support level filter to help you narrow your search based on the level of support you need and here are what the different options mean:
Low: Designed to offer sprained ankle support for mild injuries, with the main focus being on the application of compression to help manage inflammation and swelling.
Low to Moderate: Where there is instability a strap based support or ankle splint may be used to help minimise the risk of the ankle rolling (sideways movement) when mobile.
Moderate to High: If you’re looking for a higher level of stability following a grade 1 or 2 ankle injury then you may need to look at something which offers a greater control over the range of motion of the ankle to help protect you when active.
High: Where there is a requirement to control the movement of the joint and prevent or treat sprains whilst remaining active then an ankle support offering a high level of support should be worn. The Form Fit Ankle Support with Figure 8 Strap offers a laced up design to offer compression and stability, with the figure of 8 strap working to hold the ankle and prevent movements which would stretch the damaged ligament.
It’s a good question. When searching online you may see the term brace, support, strapping, protector, splint etc and the results you get in Google may differ depending on which search term you use.
How do you know what they all mean and which one to select? Well here is a quick run through of what they all mean:
Ankle Support or Ankle Brace: This is the general term to cover the majority of products you see on the market and regardless of the name given to them they are both essentially the same product.
Ankle Strapping: This could reference ankle tapes, the multi-coloured stuff you see athletes using on the tv. Alternatively, you can by a brace which has a figure 8 strap which supports the joint and minimises the chance of you rolling your ankle.
Ankle Splint: A splint as the name suggests is something which is used to keep a joint straight. In the case of the ankle however the splint is two pieces of rigid plastic which sit either side of the joint to stop sideways (or lateral) movements.
Ankle Protector: This could mean a number of things. Are you wanting to protect against a sprained ankle? If so then it could be referring a standard brace or splint. If the injury is more severe then it could refer to a walker boot, a rigid boot worn instead of cast following surgery or major injury.
